TWS Window and Door Systems have just celebrated their 20th anniversary and with it a new showroom, which exhibits Solidor’s entire collection of fourteen composite door colours in all their glory. The Kidderminster-based installation company was one of the first company’s back in 2005 to adopt the 2nd generation composite doors from Solidor and now arguably have the largest display in the region. TWS pride themselves on offering the latest products and backing this up with the values of a small family run business.

Birmingham based Royale Windows, was a finalist in the international photography competition for all customers of the profine Group, including the KBE and Kömmerling brands and with it won a digital photo frame. The competition was open to all KBE, Kömmerling and Trocal customers across Europe and included images from the retail, trade and commercial sectors. The competition was fiercely contested and the fact that Royale was a finalist was testament to their calibre of photography and the way they run their business.

Once again, there were few surprises in the Which? Report (Window Shopping, May issue), where a large sample of consumers rated independent window installers massively higher than any of the big four. It is very rewarding to see that the consensus of contempt for the worst elements of our industry continues to swing towards the major nationals. Independents as a whole are to be congratulated for this, especially as, in every other home improvement sector, it is still the small-time dodgers and bodgers who remain the ‘stars’ of the TV consumer programmes.

Firstly, congratulations to DGCOS for compensating a customer after a member’s installation was not registered for an IBG, as in the organisation’s recent press release. We must however contest the claim that this is the first time such has happened in this industry. Our records show at least one such occurrence here at Network VEKA and colleagues recall there may have been other instances going back further than our ten-year guarantee period.

Following the Glass and Glazing Federation’s (GGF) Strategy Review conclusions, the Federation has formed a new Training Committee to replace the GGF Training Forum - which had comprised mainly of external training providers. Membership of the Training Committee is now GGF Members only and is solely via nomination. Each Committee Member must be nominated by each Group within the three GGF Executives – Glazing, Home Improvement and Specialist Interest. The nominated representatives from each Group will then meet quarterly to discuss particular training needs for their sector and also to share best practice.

The GGF recently responded to a damning article about PVC-U windows. The article by Dr Simon Thurley, Chief Executive of English Heritage was published in the Financial Times and highlighted Dr Thurley’s perceived dangers of adapting and upgrading older buildings, especially when replacing windows.
